Intro:
The western Roman Empire had collapsed by AD 500. The Eastern Empire survived and kept Greek and Roman learning, including medical ideas. Some of these ideas were taken to Arabia by Nestorians (Christians who fled persecution in the Eastern Empire)

A new civilisation developed in the Middle East around AD 632, based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. After Muhammads death, islam was lead by a series of caliphs who were supposed to carry on islams teachings and spread them (sometimes by force)
By ad1000, the Muslim empire was vast, spreading from spain in the west to the river indus in the east. The caliphs grew rich through trade and were responsible for building schools,univerisites and paritucarly public baths ( hygeine was an important part of the islamic faith)
the role of religion and medicine
Religion affected how people behaved in the middle ages. in particular both christianity and Islam refusted to allow dissection of human bodies. This prevented surgoens from studying the human body in order to improve their knowledge and skill.
Both muslims and Christians bleived that diseases could be sent by their God. Christians encouraged prayer,fasting and repenting of sns to cure patients. the Muslims however via consultation of the Hadith told Muslim doctors to try and cure patients.
Charity and caring for the sick and ederly was important in the Muslim faith. Hospitals were set up as a result for the sick. At the hospital that was set up in Cairo in AD 1283, patients were given money wheny they left in order for them to rest and not go back to work straight away.

Islam encouraged learning and books were important in the Empire. Arab doctors used Greek medical texts that been translated by the Nestorians. They developed their own medical text books based on those translated. they also preserved the medical works of people such as Hippocrates.

Arab doctors accepted and used ideas about medicine that were set out in books by Hippocrates and Galen.they used ideas such as keeping the four humours balanced in the body. More importantly they used hippocrates idea of clinical observation. they carefully observed and recorded the symptons of patients and the effects of various treatments.

Arab doctors used proccsess such as distillation to prepare drugs for treating diseases and for use as a anesthetic
